Sugar Ray Robinson
“ No man dies for what he knows to be true. Men die for
what they want to be true, for what some terror in their
hearts tells them is not true.”
Sugar Ray Robinson (1921-1989) was one of
the first African American athletes who
became well-known outside the boxing arena.
He was the world welterweight champion
from 1946 to 1951, won the middleweight title
five times between 1951 and 1960, and has
been universally acclaimed as one of the
greatest boxers in the history of the sport.
Ask fight fans who the greatest boxes is and they would probably say, pound for pound, Sugar Ray Robinson. Robinson was poetry in motion, a peerless puncher who elevated the sport to an art form. He moved beautifully and punched in seamless combinations, rendering adversaries senseless with surgeon like precision. Movie star looks with a magnificent body, Robinson cut a dashing figure in and out the ring. Sugar Ray was so classy, people gladly paid money just to watch him jump rope. Virtually unbeatable as a welterweight Robinson gave up the 147 pound crown and went on to win the middleweight title an unprecedented five times.
