In 1987 Davis attended a reception in honor of
Ray Charles at Ronald Reagan's White House.
A Washington society lady, seated next to him,
asked him what he had done to be invited. "Well,"
Davis replied, "I've changed music four or five
times. What have you done of any importance
other than be white?"
All a musician can do is to get
closer to the sources of nature,
and so feel that he is in
communion with the natural laws.
"Any musician who says he is playing
better either on tea, the needle, or
when he is juiced, is a plain straight liar . . .
You can miss the most important
years of your life, the years of possible
creation."
