IMAGES & QUOTATIONS

OF AFRICAN AMERICANS

"I am not ashamed of
  my grandparents for
having been slaves.

 I am only ashamed of
 myself for having at
 one time been ashamed."

Ralph Ellison

Over the years people asked me to put the
collection in one, accessible source; a book.
Rather than write a traditional history book,
I decided to use text to supplement my images.
The pictures and the quotations from the people
featured give details that otherwise might be
hard to find. It was my hope that in this fast
paced world, you would pause and experience
the true stories of these great African Americans
and reflect upon their messages for the ages.
These men and women were pioneers and trail-
blazers in their respective fields, creating signifi-
cant impact for people of color around the world.
Indeed, for all of America, these great African
Americans illustrated what was possible to
achieve if only given an equal opportunity to
perform.  These heroes were artists, patriots,
athletes, martyrs, educators, activists, healers,
entertainers and much more to the fabric of
America.  While it begins with the institution
of slavery the book evolves through generations
of tests and triumphs on a journey that extends
all the way to the White House. It is my hope
that by knowing who we are and how we
have prevailed, we can emancipate ourselves
from the mental slavery that blinds our ambition
 and achievement..
